Breakaway is our fourth consecutive show garden created for the Royal Adelaide Show. Designed and built within a compact 6 × 3 metre site inside the Goyder Pavilion, this year’s garden explores rewilding, solitude and what happens when nature is given the opportunity to slowly take back what we have built.
How long will it last? From triumph to rubble. Fire for warmth, concrete tank for water. It’s weathering, rewilding, it’s starting to break away.
A place for gathering, a place to come together for warmth, to laugh, to share. It’s quiet here now. Not a voice to be whispered. Misty rain comes down. Burnt log smoulders, nature is re-wilding. What was built before is now starting to break away.
Moss has found its way into the openings. Groundcovers creep further across the paving. Ferns lean into the path. Plants emerge through places they were never planted. Spring water trickles in. Nature is taking back, re-wilding.
Required silence and escape grows more every day. The hustle and bustle, daily grind now exhausted, retired, worn, old. Solitude seems closer. It has become evident that now is the time to break away.
